Duelz and the Paired Workout Format That Powers Our Studios

Each session in our gyms is designed around two people competing against each other on a timer. Not two people sharing a rack and chatting between sets. Two people matched by weight, pace and background, doing the same work block, with a coach counting and a scoreboard on the wall. That format is what we call a duel, and it informs just about everything from our flooring plan to our class capacity. We operate boxing gyms and fitness studios across the United Kingdom, from Manchester and Leeds to multiple locations within the M25 area. Some of our spaces are designated boxing rooms complete with a boxing ring, heavy bags and wraps situated behind the reception area. Others are dedicated conditioning zones equipped with sleds, bikes, dumbbells and rowers. The majority of our facilities have both in the same space, because the type of customer who trains with us often wants to do both. The aspect that differentiates us from a typical gym is simple. You will never work out by yourself unless you request to. When you book online, we match you with a partner. If your partner cancels, we either assign you an individual coach or partner you with someone else at your level. The accountability is integrated into the purchase process, not into a motivational poster.

The flow of a duel session in practice

A session is 50 minutes long. The first eight minutes consist of a joint warm-up, led by the coach, during which everyone participates together regardless of experience level. Next, you are introduced to your workout partner for the day, the coach explains the scoring system, and then the workout commences. The scoring is room dependent. In our conditioning studio, it's typically reps or metres. In our boxing clubs, it's rounds, pad accuracy and defensive techniques, avoiding head contact unless you're in our competitive team and have been cleared by a coach. No one is subjected to hard contact just because they arrived early and enthusiastic.

  1. Register either at reception or via our app up to 20 minutes before the session begins.
  2. Warm-up together, as a larger group, eight minutes, focusing on mobility and increasing heart rate.
  3. Partner pairing announced by the coach based on the data we already possess about you.
  4. Perform three work cycles of roughly nine minutes, with a two-minute break between each.
  5. Log your score on the wall-based display or through the app into your profile.
  6. Cool down and complete a short partner stretch together, five minutes.

Your session results remain in your history so you can compare your performance six weeks later and monitor your progress. We do not publish the full results for an entire location, as this can turn sessions on a Tuesday evening into something most members are not seeking. Your own figures and your partner's will be visible though.

Matching you with your partner and its significance

Poor partner pairing destroys the format. Give a 95kg ex-rugby player someone who has just started training and both athletes will have wasted an hour. When you join, we gather a brief profile: mass, training experience, previous injuries, and objectives. Boxers contribute reach and stance data. The system gives you pairing suggestions, the coach makes the final decision. Coaches frequently overrule the app, and that is necessary. A member returning to training after a shoulder injury may appear suitable on paper, but still require a lighter training day.

  • Weight clusters within approximately 8kg for boxing sessions, broader for conditioning work.
  • Experience levels from novice to intermediate to competitive squad.
  • Injury indicators attached to profiles until confirmed healed by a coach and yourself.
  • Pace history from your previous six recorded sessions.
  • Preference options including same-sex pairing if required.

Regular partner locks are also available. Several couples, coworkers and house shares always select a fixed partner, thereby bypassing the Matcher system completely. This partnership is maintained as long as both individuals consistently check in at each session.

Pricing at our locations

Our pricing has been kept intentionally simple. Four tiers, no one-off registration fee, no long term commitment, apart from the competitive squad which requires ongoing commitment for coaching purposes.

Boxing clubs logistics and gear requirements

Our boxing gyms are held to a tighter schedule than the conditioning studio because they have to be. Fingertip hand wraps are expected from your first class. We sell them at reception for £8, and we lend a pair on all first trials; even so, it is best to buy your own at the earliest chance. Gloves are available in 10oz, 12oz, 14oz and 16oz, and are cleaned after every session. If you intend to train with us more than twice per week, members generally purchase their own set within one month. Shin pads and head guards remain in the ringside area and are only available for designated sparring moments. Suggested kit for boxing duels:

  • Wraps, 4.5m length suitable for most adults.
  • Indoor trainers with a flat sole (no thick heeled running shoes please).
  • A mouth guard if you fall into tier three or above.
  • Two litres of water to remain hydrated in the warm rooms.
  • A towel, which we also hire out for £2.

Technical sparring sessions are introduced at tier three, normally by week 3 or 4 for those training twice weekly. It is mainly an assessment of footwork, head position and the response to instruction. Plenty of members reach that stage and never spar a single time, yet still get what they came for from pads and bags.

Choosing the right location and day of the week

Peak times in the United Kingdom are easily predictable. Our 18:15 and 19:15 classes fill first, then our 07:00. If you are willing to vary your schedule, middle of the day duels are more coach-to-member friendly, sometimes as few as six members to one coach, compared to ten. Booking becomes available seven days in advance. Duel Unlimited and Squad members get a two hour advantage on evening sessions. Wait lists clear relatively quickly, usually in just over 24 hours, so if you want in, the waitlist is almost always worth the risk. Deciding whether you would prefer to train in a boxing club or a conditioning space comes down to the training objective. If weight loss, general fitness and a replacement for evening desk work are your goals, anything in the conditioning studio is suitable. If skill transfer is the objective, boxing clubs are better suited. Duel tier members and higher are welcome to do both without having to buy into a different membership for each.

Common errors amongst new starters within the first month

A typical beginner overtrains in the first block and has little left in the third one. The tracker encourages this. A decent first month will be consistent pacing throughout the session, not a giant opening nine minutes that leaves you surviving the dying minutes. Another common mistake is a failure to update profiles. If your body mass drops by 6kg or your shoulder becomes pain free, let us know as soon as is practical. The matching system is only as accurate as the data it contains. Members can update their information in the app in just 30 seconds. The last common mistake is planning too many sessions in your first week and then not booking any in your second. Two per week over six weeks will almost always outperform five per week over two. Our coaches will tell you the same, if they see the pattern.

Am I able to freeze my membership?

Yes, for up to 8 weeks without charge, in blocks of one week minimum. Freeze it via the membership screen in the app. Expiring session credits are rolled over without penalty during the freeze period.

FAQ

Is a partner necessarily required to undertake a duel session at Duelz?
Certainly not. Approximately 70% of our members arrive on their own. Our coaches will almost always put together a pairing for the class based on weight, recent session history and experience tier. If the numbers are uneven, a coach may pair the spare member with another late arrival or work with them directly, which can be the highest quality hour you can get.
What if my partner quits halfway through the session?
The coach simply moves you to one of the remaining participants at a similar level, or works with you directly. Your score still counts, completed blocks are stored in your profile, and you are not expected to sit the work out. We do not refund session credits for partner related issues, since the hour still runs for its full duration.
Is my membership valid across multiple sites?
Members of Duel Unlimited and Squad can visit any location in the United Kingdom without additional charge. Members of the Starter and Duel tiers are tied to their home location. Should a member require a permanent change of location, we will arrange this free of charge and without penalty, simply ask at reception.
How do the 200 free sessions work?
They are released over the first year of membership in smaller monthly allotments, not all at one time, which avoids someone using all of them within 3 weeks and then leaving. The monthly allotments appear in your app. They boost the value of paid sessions for Starter and Duel memberships and are often used as guest passes or free coaching credits for members at the Unlimited level.
Are boxing sessions safe if I have not trained previously?
Yes. Our novice members spend their early weeks doing nothing but pad work, bag rounds and footwork with zero physical contact. We will not move a member into sparring until a coach is confident they are ready, and we focus on defensive movement in that period. We also record injury flags on profiles, so the coach knows if you have a lingering issue such as a knee problem.
What are the UK holiday opening hours?
The majority of locations run a reduced timetable on bank holidays, usually 8am to 1pm or similar. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day we close completely. We announce the entire holiday schedule through the app 14 days in advance, and session credits expiring during that period are automatically pushed forward.
